Medan to Bukit Lawang takes about 2 hours 40 minutes by car (detikSumut, 2023) and 3–4 hours by public bus from Pinang Baris terminal (Wikivoyage), covering roughly 86–90 km. From Kualanamu Airport, add the transfer towards Medan. Below, each option is compared with sources.

Medan to Bukit Lawang: how many hours, really?

The published figures cluster between 2 hours 40 minutes (car, no long stops) and 4 hours (bus). Buses are slower because they stop often and may wait in Binjai to fill up. Our advice: for planning, allow 3–4 hours door to door, and more at rush hour, on holiday weekends or in heavy rain, when roads outside Medan are slower and slippery. The route heads west from Medan to Binjai, then northwest through smaller towns and plantations to Bahorok District.

Which option suits you?

Compare on four things: luggage, group size, budget and arrival time.

  • Families, groups or lots of luggage: a private car or rented car with driver, ideally straight from the airport.
  • Couples who want comfort at a moderate cost: the tourist minibus, booked a day ahead.
  • Solo travellers on a tight budget with light bags: the public bus from Pinang Baris.
  • Landing in the late afternoon or evening: a night in Medan, then travel the next morning so you arrive in daylight.

Private car or taxi

A private car is the most flexible option: you choose the departure time, can stop for meals and go straight to your accommodation. You can use a rental car with driver, a taxi or a ride-hailing car. Prices depend on the car, pick-up point, tolls, fuel and whether the driver returns empty, so agree the total price and pick-up time before you set off, and book the return trip in advance rather than looking for a car in the village on the day.

Public bus from Pinang Baris

  1. Take a taxi or ride-hailing car to Pinang Baris terminal on Jalan Gatot Subroto, Medan.
  2. Board a bus to Bukit Lawang; confirm the destination and fare before you get on.
  3. Buses usually end in Gotong Royong, about five minutes from Bukit Lawang (Wikivoyage).
  4. Take a becak or motorbike taxi for the last stretch.

Leave Medan in the morning so you arrive in daylight.

Tourist minibus

Shared tourist minibuses sit between the bus and a private car in price and comfort. Rough Guides says they take about three hours and leave around 10:00; they also link Bukit Lawang with other tourist towns such as Parapat on Lake Toba. Seats are limited, so book at least a day ahead and confirm the pick-up point.

From Kualanamu Airport

Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) is in Deli Serdang Regency, east of Medan. You have two choices:

  • Straight by car. Hire a car or taxi at the airport and drive directly to Bukit Lawang, avoiding a change in Medan. The airport is linked to the region by the Medan–Kualanamu–Tebing Tinggi toll road.
  • Via Medan by public transport. The airport train reaches Medan station in about 30–47 minutes and the DAMRI bus in about 60–90 minutes (Wikipedia); from central Medan, continue to Pinang Baris for the bus.

How do you time the trip with check-in and check-out?

Here is a worked example using hotel check-in from 14:00 and check-out by 12:00:

  • Arriving: a tourist minibus leaving Medan around 10:00 and taking about three hours puts you in Bukit Lawang around 13:00, an hour before check-in. A car leaving at 10:30 takes about 2 h 40 min on a good day.
  • Leaving: check out by 12:00, then 2 h 40 min to 4 h to Medan and another 30–90 minutes to the airport. Our advice: for a flight earlier than the evening, leave Bukit Lawang the day before and sleep in Medan.
