Choosing Bukit Lawang accommodation is easier if you start from your trip, not the photos: who is coming, whether you will trek and how you will arrive. This guide shows how to compare places to stay in Bukit Lawang, what to ask before you book, and Rindu Alam Hotel's official September 2026 rates as a reference point.

  • Location: Bukit Lawang is in Bahorok district, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, on the Bohorok River at the entrance to Gunung Leuser National Park. It is about 86–90 km or 2.5–4 hours by road from Medan (details and sources in our Medan to Bukit Lawang guide).
  • Types of accommodation: small riverside guesthouses and bungalows, homestays in local homes, and garden hotels with parking and a restaurant.
  • Busy dates: weekends, when many families from Medan, Binjai and around Langkat visit (Orbit Digital Daily, January 2025); the Eid al-Fitr holiday (Mistar.id, March 2026); and the June to early July holidays (Wikivoyage).
  • Gunung Leuser National Park entrance fee (Government Regulation PP 36/2024, in force since 30 October 2024): IDR 150,000 per person per day for foreign visitors; IDR 10,000 for Indonesians (IDR 15,000 on Sundays and public holidays) (Kompas, October 2024). Not included in room rates.
  • Rindu Alam Hotel official rates (September 2026, per room per night, room only): from IDR 500,000 (Standard Room, 2 guests) to IDR 1,900,000 (Family Suite, 4 guests).
  • Rindu Alam Hotel: 71 rooms in 4 types, 172 guests at full capacity; check-in from 14:00, check-out by 12:00; reservations on WhatsApp 24 hours a day.

Where should you stay in Bukit Lawang?

The village is small, so the choice is less about neighbourhoods than about the kind of place. Broadly there are three:

  • Right on the river. The closest you can get to nature. Some places are reached only by footpath, so ask how far you will carry your bags from where the car stops.
  • In the village centre. Handy for food and meeting your guide, and usually livelier at weekends.
  • Garden hotels with space around them. They have their own parking and restaurant, which suits travellers arriving by car, families and groups.

A note about the river: the Bohorok can rise quickly after heavy rain. In November 2003 a flash flood swept away the buildings on the village's low ground, and local people have monitored the river closely ever since (The Jakarta Post, 2014). Staying by the river is still lovely; just follow local advice on swimming and tubing after rain.

How do you choose the right place to stay?

Five things matter most, and most of them are hard to judge from a single cover photo:

  1. Vehicle access. Can a car or bus reach the door, and where do you park? This matters with large suitcases, small children or older relatives.
  2. Real capacity. Count everyone sleeping in the room, including children, and match that to the room's maximum. Ask about the beds too: one large bed or two separate ones.
  3. Hot water and drying space. After a humid, muddy day in the forest, a hot shower and a terrace to dry your clothes make a real difference.
  4. Breakfast or room only. A room-only rate looks lower than a rate with breakfast, but they are not the same thing. Ask whether there is food on site.
  5. Your dates. Weekends and holiday periods fill up fast. If your dates are flexible, weekdays give you more choice.

How much each point weighs depends on who you are. Backpackers focused on trekking usually put access to their guide and price first. Couples often look for a quiet room with a terrace. Families and groups need rooms for three or four, parking and somewhere to eat together. Older guests benefit most from a short, level walk between the car and the room.

How much does accommodation in Bukit Lawang cost?

The range is wide, from simple rooms to family suites, and other properties' rates change often, so we do not list them. What we can give you is a fixed reference point: our official rates as of September 2026, per room per night, room only.

  • Standard Room: IDR 500,000 · up to 2 guests · garden view · 27 rooms · IDR 250,000 per person for two.
  • Superior Room: IDR 600,000 · up to 2 guests · garden and river view · 18 rooms · IDR 300,000 per person for two.
  • Deluxe Room: IDR 750,000 · up to 3 guests · garden and river view · 22 rooms · IDR 250,000 per person for three.
  • Family Suite: IDR 1,900,000 · up to 4 guests · garden and river view, with a sitting area and dining table · 4 suites · IDR 475,000 per person for four.

As of September 2026 these rates are the same on weekdays and weekends; what changes on busy dates is availability. A worked example: a family of three staying two nights in a Deluxe Room pays 2 × IDR 750,000 = IDR 1,500,000 for the room, then adds meals, transport, park fees and a guide. Where can you find budget accommodation in Bukit Lawang?

We will not point you to particular properties, but the things that bring a price down are the same everywhere: a smaller room, a garden view rather than a river view, simpler bathroom facilities, a room-only rate and weekday dates. To compare fairly:

  1. Ask for the total price for your dates, not the nightly rate shown in an advert.
  2. Divide it by the number of guests actually sleeping in that room.
  3. Add what is not included, such as breakfast or an extra bed.
  4. Weigh what the number does not show: hot water, access from the car park and food on site.

Done this way, a room filled to capacity often works out cheaper per person than two smaller rooms. With us, the lowest cost per person is IDR 250,000 per night: a Standard Room for two or a Deluxe Room for three.

Is it worth staying close to the trekking start?

For many guests, the jungle trek is the reason for the trip. Visitors are not permitted to go into the jungle unaccompanied (Wikivoyage), and the meeting point is usually agreed with your guide. So the right question for any property is: how many minutes' walk is it from the room to that meeting point, and can you get food before an early start?

The length of your trek also decides how many nights you need: a half-day trek fits into one night, though it is tight with a 12:00 check-out, while a full-day trek is far more comfortable with two. Which rooms suit a family?

The most common mistake is booking by the number of adults only. At Rindu Alam Hotel, children count toward the room's capacity. Example combinations based on maximum capacity:

  • Three people: one Deluxe Room.
  • Four people: one Family Suite, with a sitting area with rattan sofas and a dining table.
  • Five people: a Deluxe Room plus a Standard Room.
  • Six people: two Deluxe Rooms, or a Family Suite plus a Standard Room.

If you need an extra bed or baby equipment, ask before you pay. For children, the river is the main attraction; stay with them in the water and avoid it when the current is strong.

How much is the entrance fee to Bukit Lawang?

The official fee is the Gunung Leuser National Park entrance ticket under PP 36/2024: IDR 150,000 per person per day for foreign visitors and IDR 10,000 for Indonesians (IDR 15,000 on Sundays and public holidays), as reported by Kompas in October 2024. What should you ask before booking?

Send these questions before you pay, wherever you book:

  1. The total price for my dates, whether it is per room or per person, and what is included.
  2. The maximum number of guests per room, including children, and the bed layout.
  3. Hot water in the bathroom.
  4. Check-in and check-out times, and what happens if I arrive late or want to leave my bags.
  5. The payment, cancellation and date-change policy, in writing.
  6. The map location and final route, whether a car can reach the door, and where to park.
  7. A contact that replies on arrival day.

How quickly and clearly a place answers tells you a lot. Our answers: check-in from 14:00 and check-out by 12:00; capacity of 2, 2, 3 and 4 guests by room type; rates per room per night, room only, with a restaurant on site; bathrooms with water heaters; a spacious, shaded car park; and a reservations team on WhatsApp 24 hours a day. Booking through an app or directly both work. Apps make comparing easy, while booking directly lets you ask the people who actually run the rooms. Either way, keep your confirmation and check that the name on the booking is right.

Is Rindu Alam Hotel right for you?

The honest answer: it suits some travellers better than others. We are a garden hotel with 71 rooms, a restaurant with open-air and indoor dining areas, terraces with bamboo chairs outside the rooms and a large car park. That works well for families, groups, travellers arriving by car or bus, and trekkers who want a hot shower and dinner without going out again.
